Assistive Technology in the School Setting
Assistive technology strategies and tools are used if a student has difficulty reading, following directions, writing, etc. and teachers believe the student may benefit from literacy software with text-to-speech which reads books aloud, speech-to-text etc. The first step is to discover what software or tool would be beneficial, considering the student’s specific learning issues and social and personal preferences. After matching the student's specific needs with functional features, an educated choice can be made as to which technologies are most likely to produce the desired outcomes.
